Living in Serbia & Belgrade 2026 — Expat & Nomad Guide

Why Serbia and Belgrade are becoming a top expat destination: no visa for most, low taxes, cheap rent, fast internet, and a vibrant expat community forming fast.

Serbia: Europe's Underrated Expat Hub

Serbia doesn't make most lists — but it probably should. Belgrade has quietly become one of the most livable cities for expats and digital nomads in Central Europe. Here's why:

  • Visa-free for most nationalities for 90 days (many can stay longer with residence registration)
  • Paušal tax system: flat tax of ~$100–200/month for registered freelancers regardless of income
  • Very cheap rent: furnished 1BR in Belgrade center for $400–600/month
  • Excellent internet: 200–500 Mbps fiber widely available, $10–15/month
  • Dynamic nightlife and food scene — Belgrade is one of Europe's best party cities

Best Neighborhoods

1

Vračar

Expat Favorite, Cafe Culture

Vračar is Belgrade's bohemian neighborhood — lined with independent cafes, bookshops, and small restaurants. Very walkable and has the highest concentration of expats. 1BR: $450–650/month.

2

Stari Grad (Old Town)

Historic Center

The historic core of Belgrade — home to Knez Mihailova Street (the main pedestrian zone) and the famous Kalemegdan fortress. More expensive and touristy but centrally located. 1BR: $550–800/month.

3

New Belgrade (Novi Beograd)

Modern, Cheap, Well-Connected

Across the river, New Belgrade is the modern financial district. Less charming, but apartments are larger and cheaper, and it has excellent transport links to the airport and the rest of the city.

The Paušal Tax — Serbia's Best-Kept Secret

Freelancers and sole proprietors can register as a "preduzetnik paušalac" — a flat-rate taxpayer. Your monthly tax is fixed regardless of how much you earn, typically €80–200/month depending on the municipality and your activity. This is one of the most favorable tax setups in Europe for high-earning online workers.

Practical Tips

  • Open a Raiffeisen or UniCredit account — takes 1–2 days with a passport and temporary address proof
  • Serbia is NOT in the EU or Schengen — your Schengen days are unaffected by time in Serbia
  • Use Bolt for taxis (very cheap — city rides $2–5)
  • Learn a few words of Serbian — Cyrillic script but Latin is everywhere
  • Avoid Serbian summer (July–August) — can reach 40°C. Best months: May–June and September–October.
